The Becoming of Congo: Epistemologies, Practices, and Imaginaries
The Congo Research Network (CRN) is organizing its fifth international conference, to be held at the University of Milan on 15-16 September 2020. The conference aims to bring together junior and senior scholars across the humanities and social sciences, sharing a common interest in the DRC. It specifically aims to provide space for transdisciplinary and comparative analyses and reflections, within and beyond Congolese Studies.
This edition of the CRN focuses on the concept of “becoming”: the becoming of research on/around the Congo (new paths and new relations between “knowledges/epistemologies” and agents—academics, artists, writers, cultural operators, journalists and bloggers, activists and others); the becoming of Congolese culture (new places of creation and exhibition, new ways of sharing/transmitting knowledge and cultural practices); the becoming of land and questions of mobility, not only in the Congo, but also in Africa and the world (climate change and social justice). All these can be articulated in a multi or transdisciplinary perspective, along the following lines:
– African and Congolese Renaissance: Decolonizing knowledge and practices, recognizing authorship and participation;
– Disciplinary boundaries in Congo studies and collaborative approaches beyond and within the academia;
– (A)gendered perspectives in Congo and in the Diaspora, today and tomorrow;
– Trauma, resilience, transformation: their representations and negotiations;
– Colonial–postcolonial transitions in a context of (proto)globalization;
– Climate change, land grabbing, and environmental humanities;
– Mobile people in and out of Congo (economic, climatic, conflictual, political, etc.);
– “Mikilismes” and new social classes within and out of Congo: dynamics and (auto)representations;
– Digitalization and mediated culture: platforms, visual expressions, data bases, accessibility;
– The future of Congolese languages;
– Congo as utopia and dystopia;
– Imagining Congolese futures through writing, film, painting, literature, and the arts.
Panel proposals (title + description of up to 750 words) should be sent to the organizers at congoresearchnetwork@gmail.com by 15 February 2020.
Panel proposals should include at least two agreed papers.
Individual paper proposals (title + abstract of up to 400 words) should be sent to the same email address by 28 February 2020. Proposals can be written either in French or English. Decisions regarding accepted papers and panels will be sent out to applicants on 20 March 2020.
Unfortunately, the organizing committee cannot refund participants’ travel and accommodation expenses. Participants will also have to pay for their own meals during the conference.

Le devenir du Congo: savoirs, pratiques et imaginaires
Le Congo Research Network (CRN) organise son cinquième colloque international à l’Université de Milan, les 15 et 16 septembre 2020. Le colloque a pour but de réunir des chercheurs débutants et confirmés dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales et qui partagent un intérêt commun pour la RDC. Le comité organisateur espère tout particulièrement encourager l’émergence de réflexions et d’analyses transdisciplinaires et comparatives, au sein et au-delà des études Congolaises.
Cette édition du CRN se concentre sur le concept du « devenir »: le devenir de la recherche sur/autour du Congo (nouvelles voies et nouveaux liens entre « savoirs/épistémologies » et agents—universitaires, artistes, écrivains, acteurs culturels, journalistes et blogueurs, activistes et autres) ; le devenir de la culture congolaise (nouveaux lieux de création et d’exhibition, nouvelles façons de partager/transmettre les savoirs et les pratiques culturelles) ; le devenir du pays et la problématique de la mobilité, non seulement au Congo, mais également en Afrique et dans le monde (changements climatiques et justice sociale). Tout ceci peut s’articuler dans une optique pluri ou transdisciplinaire selon les axes suivants :
– Renaissance africaine et congolaise : décolonisation des savoirs et des pratiques culturelles ;
– Frontières disciplinaires dans les études sur le Congo et stratégies de collaboration au-delà et au-dedans du monde académique ;
– Perspectives (dé)genrées au Congo et dans la diaspora, aujourd’hui et demain ;
– Trauma, résilience, transformation : représentations et négociations ;
– Transitions coloniales-postcoloniales dans le cadre de la mondialisation ;
– Changements climatiques, appropriation des terres et sciences humaines environnementales ;
– Mobilité des gens à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur du Congo (économique, climatique, conflictuelle, politique, etc.)
– « Mikilismes » et nouvelles classes sociales à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur du Congo : dynamiques et (auto)représentations
– Numérisation et culture médiatisée : plateformes, expressions visuelles, base de données, accessibilité aux Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication ;
– Futur des langues congolaises ;
– Congo en tant qu’utopie et dystopie ;
– Imagination des futurs du Congo par l’écriture, le cinéma et les arts visuels.
Les propositions de panel (titre et description, max. 750 mots) doivent être envoyées aux organisateurs par email à congoresearchnetwork@gmail.com avant le 15 février 2020. Les propositions de panel doivent comprendre au moins deux communications individuelles.
Les propositions de communications individuelles (titre et résumé, max. 400 mots) doivent être envoyées à la même adresse avant le 29 février 2020. Les propositions peuvent être envoyées en français ou en anglais. Les participants seront informés le 20 mars 2020 sur l’acceptation de leur proposition.
Malheureusement, le comité organisateur ne peut rembourser les frais de déplacement et de logement. Les participants devront également prendre en charge leurs repas pour la durée de la conférence.
