[Event] “Roots & Recipes” – European Researchers’ Night @AfricaMuseum 25-26.09.2026

Au nom des partenaires du consortium, The Food Bridge vzw, la KU Leuven, le Jardin botanique de Meise et Scivil, ainsi que du Comité citoyen, l’AfricaMuseum a le plaisir de vous inviter à Roots & Recipes.

Cet événement unique se tiendra à l’AfricaMuseum de Tervuren les 25 et 26 septembre 2026, dans le cadre de la Nuit européenne des chercheurs. Il réunira des chercheurs, des chefs cuisiniers, des communautés de la diaspora africaine et des citoyens afin d’explorer la science, la culture et les histoires qui se cachent derrière les traditions alimentaires africaines et afro-descendantes.

Au menu

Le vendredi soir 25 septembre, assistez à la projection de Roots and Plates: A Story of Afro Food in Belgium, un documentaire qui retrace le parcours de Roger Dushime à travers les traditions culinaires afro-descendantes et leur rôle dans la construction des identités afro-belges.

Après la projection, rejoignez-nous pour une table ronde. Les chercheurs Nicole Grégoire (ULB) et Sese Kabanyegeye (UCL), ainsi que les experts culinaires Suzanne Badiane et Roger Dushime, discuteront de l’alimentation à la fois comme objet d’étude scientifique et comme puissant marqueur identitaire, façonnant et rassemblant les communautés.

Le samedi 26 septembre, l’AfricaMuseum se transformera en une Foire citoyenne des sciences autour de l’alimentation africaine(African Food Citizen Science Fair), proposant des ateliers interactifs, des dégustations et des démonstrations pour tous les âges.

Venez en famille ou entre amis : il y aura de nombreuses activités à découvrir, notamment un parcours spécialement conçu pour les enfants à partir de 6 ans. Vous pourrez :

·                    Découvrir et goûter un arc-en-ciel de variétés de haricots du Burundi, qui aident les agriculteurs à s’adapter au changement climatique ;

• Déguster des insectes comestibles afin d’explorer de nouvelles saveurs encore peu présentes sur le marché ;
• Extraire l’ADN d’une banane à l’aide d’ustensiles de cuisine du quotidien ;
• Participer au Défi de l’agent des douanes (Customs Officer Challenge).

In the name of the consortium partners, The Food Bridge vzw, KU Leuven, the Meise Botanic Garden and Scivil, together with the Citizens’ Committee, the AfricaMuseum is delighted to invite you to Roots & Recipes. 

This unique event is taking place at the AfricaMuseum in Tervuren on 25-26 September 2026, as part of the European Researchers’ Night. It will bring together researchers, chefs, African diaspora communities and citizens to explore the science, culture and stories behind African and African diaspora food traditions. 

What is on the menu? 

On Friday evening, 25 September, enjoy the screening of Roots and Plates: A Story of Afro Food in Belgium, a documentary following Roger Dushime’s journey through Afro-descendant culinary traditions and their role in shaping Afro-Belgian identities. After the screening, join us for a round-table discussion. Researchers Nicole Grégoire and Sese Kabanyegeye and culinary experts Suzanne Badiane and Roger Dushime, will explore food as a subject of scientific study and as a powerful marker of identity, shaping and uniting communities.

On Saturday, 26 September, the AfricaMuseum will transform into an interactive African Food Citizen Science Fair, with hands-on workshops, tastings and demonstrations for all ages. Bring your family and friends, as there is a lot to explore in this Fair, including a dedicated parcours for children aged 6 and up. Try a rainbow of beans from Burundi, which help farmers adapt to climate change. Taste edible insects to explore new flavors which are not easily available on the market. Extract DNA from a banana using everyday kitchen tools. And take part in the Customs Officer Challenge.
