4th CRN PhD Days: Highlights from 15–16 January

The 4th Congo Research Network (CRN) PhD Days were successfully held on 15–16 January 2026, in a hybrid format at UCLouvain (Louvain-la-Neuve) and online. The event brought together PhD candidates and early-career researchers working on or in Central Africa, as well as senior scholars from a wide range of disciplines.

Over two days, participants engaged in rich and stimulating discussions around 51 paper presentations and 18 posters, reflecting the diversity of current research on the Congo and the wider Central African region. The hybrid format allowed for strong international participation and lively exchanges between on-site and online attendees.

We were honoured to welcome Gillian Mathys (Ghent University) and Sammy Baloji (Sint Lucas Antwerpen) as keynote speakers, whose interventions offered inspiring perspectives on historical research, artistic practice, and critical methodologies.

Poster displays during the coffee breaks provided valuable moments for informal discussion and networking, fostering dialogue across disciplines and career stages.

The CRN PhD Days once again confirmed their role as a key platform for supportive scholarly exchange, feedback on work in progress, and community building among researchers of Central Africa.

We warmly thank all presenters, discussants, participants, and the organising team for making this edition such a success, and we look forward to the next CRN PhD Days.
