The latest round of recruitment for the Birmingham Fellows has now
begun. The full details can be found at:

The University is appointing around 25 fellows this time. The deadline
is 27 August: longlisting and shortlisting will take place in September
and the interviews will be in the week commencing 15 October.
All the other Colleges are gearing up for these and are using their
networks as much as possible to ensure that they attract the best
candidates. We should do the same and should make sure as many staff as
possible in our departments are making these positions known to good
people all over the world. There’s lots more detail on the website but
here are just a few points to bear in mind:
* Themes: as with last time, the Fellowships are being
advertised using a long list of ‘priority areas’. The ones that relate
to CAL [Arts & Law] and COSS [Social Science] have been made as broad as
possible in order to be as inclusive as possible. I cannot think of
anyone working in arts and law or of any area currently within the
College that cannot be made to fit one of these themes.
* Applicants do not need to fit the themes. So long as they can
show that their work complements existing strengths here then they are
also free to apply.
* This time the job advertisement makes it very clear that these
are permanent positions with an extremely attractive first five years.
* There are no quotas on the number of successful fellowships
being applied to any of the priority areas or to any College
* There are no concrete rules on what is meant by ‘early career’
Applications can come from excellent people early on in their
postdoctoral career (though straight out of PhD would be pushing it
given the level of competition) as well as those already in lectureships
at other institutions.
Do please make use of your contacts. Think of early career staff at
other institutions who would be willing to come here, as well as of
excellent people currently on Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships, BA
postdocs, JRFs, Marie-Curie fellowships, etc . And do cast the net wide:
there is nothing stopping us from attracting the best people from all
over the world.
